Last month we finally got the chance to once again conduct a weeklong workshop in Uganda. Our local partner helped us organise everything, they did a great job. We traveled there on the 10th of February 2015. Our goal with the workshop was to educate 10 journalists on how to use new media tools for sharing their stories online.
Together with our local partner, we found young journalists who were interested in learning more about how they can help report about the human rights violation that are happening in the country.
The whole week gave us a great insight of the situation. The workshop gave the participants the opportunity to learn more about how they can help change the future for the next generations. It is so clear that so many of them care about what’s happening in the country. This is something that makes our role even more important. With projects like this, we have the chance to actually change something. Seeing these young people’s will and desire to raise awareness of the violence is truly passionate and inspiring. During the week, we taught them how to use their mobile phones in order to capture their stories on video. And how to do it with discretion, security was a big part of the program. Before leaving Sweden, we also recorded educational videos for them, explaining and showing how they can use the internet to raise money for their work. Teaching them how to create online campaigns, pitch private donors and get people to support what they live for.
They have the chance to shape the future of Uganda. And many of them will hopefully now be able to know how to get their voices heard in a world where there’s so much noise. We’re now back in Sweden, but our contact with them will continue further on.
